From an idea to an ISWS initiative
The Weed Management Photography Contest was conceived to encourage young weed-science scholars to observe the field more closely and communicate what they see through meaningful photographs. The proposal recognised that a strong scientific image can do more than record a plant, a practice or a field condition. It can reveal a problem, preserve evidence, explain a management response and make scientific knowledge accessible to people beyond the laboratory or classroom.
The proposal was placed before the Executive Committee of the Indian Society of Weed Science (ISWS). After thoughtful consideration of its academic value, outreach potential and relevance to the next generation of weed scientists, the Executive Committee decided that the contest should be organised as an official student-focused initiative. That decision transformed an individual idea into a shared institutional programme—one designed to connect scientific accuracy with creativity, field experience and responsible communication.
The original idea for this initiative was proposed by Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Office Manager, ISWS, and was subsequently considered and adopted by the ISWS Executive Committee.
The contest is open exclusively to currently enrolled M.Sc. students and Ph.D. scholars. Participants may submit between one and five original photographs that reflect weed occurrence, crop–weed relationships, ecological effects, management practices, emerging challenges, field innovation or other subjects directly connected with weed science. Every entry should be supported by an accurate title, description, date and location so that the photograph has scientific context as well as visual impact.
Entries will be evaluated by an independent jury using published criteria that consider weed-management relevance, scientific value, originality, visual quality, clarity of message and the strength of the accompanying caption and description. The process is intended to reward careful observation and honest documentation—not simply technical polish. Participants are therefore encouraged to present authentic field situations, explain why they matter and show how photography can contribute to scientific understanding, education and better stewardship.
The three highest-ranked participants will receive special recognition. The first-prize winner will receive ₹5,000, the second-prize winner ₹3,500, and the third-prize winner ₹2,000. Each winner will also receive an official certificate, a Student Travel Grant for a 3rd AC train ticket, and complimentary registration to attend the 4th International Weed Conference (4th IWC) in Ludhiana from 18 to 21 November 2026. The awards will be presented during the conference, giving the winning students an opportunity to be recognised in the presence of scientists, teachers, researchers and members of the professional weed-science community.
Beyond prizes, the contest seeks to create a credible visual record of weeds, their impacts and the people and practices involved in their management. Selected photographs may support ISWS education, exhibitions, publications and non-commercial scientific outreach with proper credit to the photographer. Copyright remains with the participant, while the contest provides a respected platform on which student work can be seen, discussed and appreciated.
